Ghanaian lawmaker Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who represents the Asante-Akyem North constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, has been arrested in the UK.
The Independent candidate, who is a sitting member of Ghana’s Parliament, was arrested in Manchester two days ago over an alleged case of domestic abuse. According to reports exclusively gathered by @SelTheBomb, the 38-year-old politician had an altercation with his ex-wife over their children, which escalated into a physical assault that left her severely battered.
Insiders told @SelTheBomb that both the police and an ambulance were called to the scene, resulting in Frimpong’s immediate arrest, while his ex-wife, identified as Nana Afriyie, was rushed to the ICU of a hospital for treatment.
Frimpong and Afriyie married in 2016, separated in 2021 and officially divorced in 2023 April but share two daughters. According to sources, the parents have faced ongoing co-parenting challenges. Tensions escalated a few months ago when the MP allegedly attempted to take their daughters, aged seven and eight, to Ghana without the mother’s permission. He was reportedly stopped at Heathrow Airport in what has since been described as a child trafficking case.
The children were escorted by police back to their mother, who is recognised as their primary carer. In response, social services imposed strict parameters regarding custody, which included barring Frimpong from contacting both the children and their mother. This ban was lifted on 22nd July after he signed a bond agreeing to conduct himself appropriately. This week’s confrontation marked his first encounter with his children since then and it ended in violence.
“I was told he came to visit the children this weekend and after dropping them off, their mother confronted him over certain things he had told them. He was with another lady in the car during the confrontation, and tempers flared up out of embarrassment, leading to the assault,” a source told the Snapchat blogger.
Frimpong was initially held at Swinton Police Station but has since been granted bail. He is set to appear in court soon. More details soon.
